| Gypsy, based on the memoir of strip tease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, casts an affectionate eye on show business during the Depression. Mama Rose dreams of vaudeville stardom for her two daughters, June and Louise. Herbie, the girl's agent, wants to marry Rose and quit show business. Rose refuses to accept that vaudeville is dead and remains determined to make one of her daughters a star, even if it is only in burlesque. Showstoppers include "You Gotta Get a Gimmick," Everything's Coming up Roses," and "Let Me Entertain You." Critics agree that Gypsy is one of the best American musicals ever written. |
