The place is Los Angeles, and the time is the late 1940s. A writer is adapting his private eye novel to the Hollywood screen. He finds he has a lot in common with his shamus (just as his other characters have a lot in common with other people in his life). For one thing, he can’t turn down a job even when he knows better, and he can’t say “no” to a good lookin’ dame.
