General Meeting
The General Meeting this month will be on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, 8:00 PM at the theater, Westchester Playhouse, 8301 Hindry Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90045.
Hospitality
Our meeting hospitality will be provided this month by Christy Engels, thank you Christy!
Workshop
This month will have another great workshop! A heartfelt selection of scenes from "Collected
Stories,” a contemporary play by Donald Margulies. The Hollywood Reporter called this play "an affecting character study and a well-drawn portrait of the insular world of fiction writers, demonstrating the playwright's gift for sharply written and incisive dialogue." Stellar performances by Maria Pavone and Tiffany Towers, with profound and subtle directing by
Michael Allen, are promised. If you liked last month's workshop, brace yourself for this one!
Up Coming Workshops
Up coming workshops are scheduled for Shari Barrett in March, Dave Parke in April, Liz Reinhardt in June and Michael Murphy in July. May, August and November are open. October will be our annual Music Hall and December will by our annual Holiday Party.
Need to schedule a date for your workshop? Contact Gert Nord at (phone number available in mailed copy of bulletin). Kentwood Workshops are a perfect place to show off! Go on, show off, you know you want to!
Proof, by David Auburn
The January/February 2008 Production is PROOF, by David Auburn, directed by Sheldon Metz and assistant directed by Jim Crawford. Valerie Ruel is producer and Drew Fitzsimmons is stage manager. The show closes Saturday, February 16. DO NOT miss this show!
To all Kentwood Members:
The response to this production of Proof has been overwhelmingly positive. Not only the four incredible reviews, but the personal responses from members, season seat holders and regular attendees. Being my last show at Kentwood, after 25 years as a member, I wanted something special to go out on. Your response has helped accomplish that goal.
The amazing cast, all of whom could present this production at ANY house in town, was a dream come true. My heart felt appreciation to everyone who worked on the show, from my fabulous A.D., Jim Crawford, Producer Valerie Ruel and Stage Manager, Drew Fitzsimmons, to those who helped in building the set to picking up the tables after work Sunday's lunch to sweeping the breezeway to pouring coffee.
But, most of all, the cast. They did the hard work. They learned the lines. They learned the blocking. They tried on endless costumes. They put up with me. And, they delivered, making this one of Kentwood's most memorable shows. It's a parting gift I will remember. Meredith, Scot, Christine and Andrew flourished through rehearsal and grow with each performance. The end result is a beautiful white rose. My very humble thanks to all. Sheldon Metz

Children’s Show
The Kentwood Board has approved April 5th, 12th and 19th as show dates for our next Children’s Production at Kentwood. Possible Directors for the effort are penciled in as Drew Fitzsimmons or Sheldon Metz and Actors from the Kentwood Children’s Theater Classes will be involved.
A Murder is Announced by Agatha Christie, adapted for the stage by Leslie Darbon
Our May/June 2008 Production will be A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED by Agatha Christie, directed by Carol Becker. Lori A. Marple-Pereslete will produce and Liz Reinhardt will assistant direct.
Kentwood Players will hold open auditions for “A Murder is Announced” by Agatha Christie, stage adaptation by Leslie Darbon, at the Westchester Playhouse on Saturday, March 15 from 11:00 AM-5:30 PM and Sunday, March 16 from 7:00-10:00 PM. Callbacks will be held on Monday, March 17 from 7:00-10:00 PM.
The production will be directed by Carol Becker, with Assistant Director Liz Reinhardt. Appropriately enough, the show’s producer is Lori Marple – those who are familiar with Christie’s work will recognize that often-used name. In true Agatha Christie style, this classic whodunit has many suspects, each with their own motives. In the end, it is that ultimate sleuth, the venerable Miss Marple, who solves the case.
The director requests that all actors bring a headshot and resume to the auditions and be prepared to present a memorized one-to-two minute monologue from any play using a standard British accent. Time pending, you may be asked to read sides. Ms. Becker is interested in casting excellent character-driven actors who are not only talented, but also have a feel for British humor and the mystery genre. Please note that the play has many twists and turns and will call for actors who are comfortable with movement as well as minimal fight choreography.
Rehearsals begin March 19, 2008. The show will be presented from May 16 through June 21 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM.
For information about “A Murder is Announced,” please contact director Carol Becker at carolmbecker@mac.com.
“A Murder is Announced” character breakdown
Miss Marple – While not a formal detective, she is an expert sleuth when it comes to solving crimes. She is the heroine of the play and is always a step ahead of the culprit, diligent and unafraid to speak her mind (age 70+ or can play that age). LEAD. British accent required.
Letitia Blacklock – Intelligent and strong-willed, she is a lady first and foremost. She runs the full gambit of emotions and has established rapports with all characters in the show as they look to her for guidance and support. (age 40-49) LEAD. British accent required.
Inspector Craddock – A gritty, old school detective who has been solving crimes for most of his life. He tries leading the investigations as much as possible and while he is very good at his job, he is not quite as polished as Miss Marple. (age 50-60) LEAD. British accent required.
Dora Bunner (Bunny) – Jittery friend of Miss Blacklock. She is extremely loyal, but is in a constant state of anxiety. She is fragile, quiet, and nervous. She has trouble calming down when riled up. (age 40-49) MAJOR SUPPORTING ROLE. British accent required.
Mitzi – Cook who serves Miss Blacklock. She tends to be on the moody side and feels as though everyone is against her and takes her for granted. She provides much of the comedy in the play and has not quite perfected her English. (age 28-35) MAJOR SUPPORTING ROLE. Eastern European accent required.
Patrick Simmons – Handsome, pompous cousin of Miss Blacklock. He is opinionated and doesn’t mind picking fights with his sister, Julia. He is a bit of a young know-it-all. SUPPORTING ROLE. (age 25-30) British accent required.
Julia Simmons – Classic little sister. Pretty, but whiny cousin of Miss Blacklock. She can be sarcastic or sincere depending on her mood. She is equally as opinionated as her brother. (age 25-30) SUPPORTING ROLE. British accent required.
Phillipa Haymes – Beautiful, mature and refined. She has formed a special bond with Miss Blacklock. She is very secretive about her past. (age 25-30) SUPPORTING ROLE. British accent required.
Mrs. Clara Swettenham – She can be a bit of a busybody and defensive depending with whom she is talking. She depends and leans on her son, Edmund. (age 45-55) SUPPORTING ROLE. British accent required.
Edmund Swettenham – He is a writer who is mysterious and serious at the same time. At times, he has a dark, brooding way about him. He loves Phillipa and is often embarrassed by his overzealous Mother. His motives remain a mystery. (age 25-30) SUPPORTING ROLE. British accent required.
Sergeant Mellors – Male. Helps Craddock with the initial investigation. (open age – must be younger than Craddock) MINOR SUPPORTING ROLE. British accent required.
Rudi Scherz – Male. The gunman. (25-35) MINOR SUPPORTING ROLE. British accent required.

Sad News to Report
Doris Brown Mazerov, our friend and Kentwood Member passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2008. A well attended memorial service was held February 10th at the Congregational Church of the Messiah in Westchester, with a lovely reception, hosted by Doti’s daughter Nancy Brown and held at Paul and Doti’s home afterwards to celebrate her life.
In Memory of Doris Brown Mazerov
Doris threw her theatrical arms around Kentwood and portrayed some of the great legends of the theater from Blanche in STREETCAR, to Linda in DEATH OF A SALESMAN, and Grandma in LOST IN YONKERS. She was particularly proud of her work in VIRGINIA WOLFE and SUMMER AND SMOKE. Doris won over 28 awards and was revered in any cast with whom she worked. Directing became her passion and SYLVIA was her favorite.
In addition to her consummate skill as an actress and director, she had a marvelous, mellow contralto voice, the most soothing and melodic you can imagine. “Green Sleeves” was her signature song when we gathered around the piano – and “My Ship Has Sailed” was another song to dream by.
Kentwood was sheer joy to Doris and the pleasure she gave to each and every one of us and our audiences will always be remembered. Charlotte Lee Schildkret
KENTWOOD MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR DORIS BROWN MAZEROV
Kentwood Players President Sheldon Metz has scheduled a Life Celebration for Doti at the Theater on March 22, 2008, 12:00 to 4:00 PM. Please contact Sheldon if you are interested in speaking or performing at the celebration or if you are interested in bringing food or drinks. Come and help us celebrate the long, full and passionately lived life of Doris Brown Mazerov, beloved Kentwood Member. Nancy Brown said her mother wanted Kentwood Members to cry a little and laugh a lot and she wanted the members of Kentwood Players to know she loved them!

A Tribute to Elizabeth
Elizabeth Salback Paddock began her Charter Membership at Kentwood Players as Elizabeth Thornborgh. Her beloved husband, Pierre Paddock, called to say she died Monday, January 14, 2008 after a long haul with Alzheimer’s Disease. Elizabeth was the Mother of the Awards Dinner Dance and the remarkable President who saw Kentwood through moving from the adventure of the Continental Restaurant Theater in the round to the warehouse which became the Westchester Playhouse where Kentwood now lives and thrives guiding Kentwoodians through the shoals of little money to no money and keeping us family all the way.
In those early days, it was show to show survival and the dedication of each and every member made it possible led by the firm administrative hand of Elizabeth. She was a marvelous executive, acute administrator and capable Public Relations expert attending Chamber meeting and all the philanthropic service organizations in Westchester drumming up theater parties. Before a show opened, we knew what our profit would be, the revenue taken in from Elizabeth’s Theater Parties. Elizabeth was the brains. Jan and Arky Marcom were the spirit and still are – And then there were we believers who dedicated our time and talent to Kentwood Players. Elizabeth, along with Jan, Arky and Betty Frances were the last of the four who originated the idea of a community theater in Westchester.
Onstage Elizabeth always played a lady to the hilt because she was a lady in love with Kentwood, a P.T.A. lady turned thespian. In her high heels, Elizabeth sloshed through the muck at the Barn and the mire at the Pump House guiding us through the upheaval of losing the Pump House and kicking around Westchester booking for a new home. Elizabeth will never be forgotten by those of us who knew and admired her. Charlotte Lee Schildkret

Telephone Tree
Sadly, the Telephone Tree has had to be activated too many times in the last year to let everyone know another beloved Kentwood Player is now taking center stage in Heaven, When the telephone tree is activated, the Committee drops whatever they are doing and hops right on the phone. Many thanks to Barbara Brophey, Maria Cohen, Hal Fisher, Adina Silo, and Jeanne Spain. Their enthusiasm makes the Telephone Tree work and as Chairperson, I want to express my gratitude. You do a great job for Kentwood and we all appreciate your effort. Thanks.

A Special Birthday
Carl Price being a Leap Year Baby sure makes the birthdays few and far between, but oh so special the 29th of February. Just think planning a birthday party for four years – WOW! Carl Price will be 96 on February 29th, which is actually his 24th birthday, so rather than being Golden, it will be the Silver Anniversary of his birth!
Carl and Frances have been married forever and for them forever is not long enough – forever is just the beginning of a love that has lasted all their lives, Their devotion to one another is so beautiful to see. From the very beginning when Kentwood bought the corner of the property at 8301 Hindry, Carl has been there for us with good ideas and expertise to help us create our precious Westchester Playhouse out of a cavernous warehouse with a loading dock. His generosity of spirit and especially the easement he granted Kentwood enable us to be completely independent, an enviable position for a Community Theater.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARL and may your benevolence one day grant you and Frances a special front row seat in heaven for our heavenly productions there! Charlotte Lee Schildkret
Announcements
In January, Kristen guest-starred on "Las Vegas" playing a jilted fiancée. In real life, her wedding of last June to Morgan Langley is featured in the Spring issue of the specialty magazine available now on most grocery and other newstands called "Los Angeles Weddings". The show Morgan created and produced, "Jail" (which takes up where his Dad's "Cops" leaves off) premiere's its second season last Tuesday night on Channel 13 (MyNetworkTV) at 9:00. The episode that is supposed to air was shot in the Las Vegas jail on the week that O.J. was re-arrested. The police allowed them to include his arrest and detainment in the episode, but not to advertise it. (Our cable channel guide suggests that the Las Vegas jail episode is not the episode that aired Tuesday, but we expect it is in error.) Rocky Miller
