The
Supporting Cast: Director Ben Lupejkis and producers
Calia Mintzer and Charlotte Lee Schildkret are ready
to hold auditions this weekend for this fun filled comedy
opening November 7. Auditions will be held Saturday,
September 13 from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM and Sunday, September
14 from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM. The following is the cast
breakdown:
Ellen: Early - mid 40’s - alive, optimistic, happy, but careful,
she will try many things to keep balance in her friends’
lives. She is the intelligent and smartly coutured wife
of a Pulitzer Prize winning novelist.
Mae: Early - late 60’s - energized, feisty, attractive,
enthusiastic. However, she is not a Pollyanna
and expresses her feelings of displeasure or disgust
through humor. She is the well-tailored
mother of a world famous musician.
Sally: Mid 30’s - Early 40’s - represents all that is fashionable
to people with too much money. She is self-obsessed,
neurotic, and doggedly holds on to things, like her
failed marriage to her congressman
husband.
Arnold: Mid-late 40’s - casually well-dressed husband of a famous
and successful playwright who does not share his name.
He talks a great “New York” game, but it’s
all bravado, as he’s happy to be in the background
where he can’t screw things up.
Florrie: Late 30’s - mid 40’s - married to a movie star
and one-time lothario, who she has under control. She
has a wicked sense of humor and enjoys a good laugh,
unless she thinks the laugh is on her. Coming from a
working class background she feels inferior
to her more polished friends.
New
Play Approval: The board has approved Neil Simon’s
Barefoot in the Park to be directed by Clay Kugler
in March/April 2004 and William Inge’s Picnic
to be directed by Gail Bernardi in July/August 2004.
Also approval has been given to produce a children’s
Christmas special the first two Saturday afternoons
in December.
This
and that (that shouldn’t go unread): At a
special board meeting on August 24 the board voted not
to have a dinner dance at the Proud Bird in 2004 having
lost over $2000 on this year’s event. The board
feels that we cannot continue to subsidize the high
cost of dinner dance tickets, under our current financial
circumstances. Some alternatives have been discussed,
but no decisions have been made. Ideas include raising
dinner dance ticket prices to cover the entire cost,
replacing the band with our own recorded music, finding
a less expensive venue, or having awards, entertainment,
and a catered dinner at the theatre. Members are invited
to offer ideas and opinions at the next general membership
meeting. Please give it some serious thought ahead of
time and come share your ideas at the meeting.
Here,
There, and Everywhere: Rocky Miller is Fred/Petruchio,
Ryan McCormack is Bill Calhoun/Lucentio, and Peter Miller
is Paul in Kiss Me Kate at the Whittier Center
Theatre. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8:00
PM September 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, and 20 and Sunday, September

or call Rocky or Vicki Miller. Toni DiModica is playing
the part of Beatrice in A View from the Bridge
at Theatre Palisades from September 5 - October 11.
Jerry Less directed two plays at the Jewel Box Theatre
in New York, L.O.L. (Laughing Out Loud) and Chemistry
Lab (which may move to a bigger venue!). Next year
Jerry is slated to direct Henry IV. Larry Sands
(from The Boys Next Door) got a national Budweiser
commercial. Larry can also be seen performing with his
band at the Whiskey on Wilshire Blvd. Doris Shoumaker
is making a good recovery and recently staged a wheelchair
ballet for the home in which she was staying! She’s
now getting around a bit without a walker. Elizabeth
Bouton, Jon Sparks, Chris Peduzzi, and Melanie Marshall
are performing in a cabaret show the four of them wrote.
They will be performing at the West End Dinner Theatre
in Los Alamitos on Sunday, September 28 at 6:00 PM (doors
open at 5:00). You are invited to bring food, beer,
or wine. Coffee, tea, and water are complimentary with
the price of the ticket ($15). For more information
check the website: www.thewestend.org. Susan Stangl
will be appearing in a production of a new translation
of Sophocles’ Antigone along with Cynthia
Manous at Open Stage West located at 14366 Ventura Blvd.
at Beverly Glen (Oak Ridge Plaza, 2nd floor) . Performances
begin September 13 and continue through October 5 Saturdays
at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 7:00 PM (with a performance
Friday September 26 at 8:00 PM instead of Saturday September
27). For more information call (310) 210-0910. Pamla
Abramson will be appearing in Palm Desert’s Joslyn
Players production of The Supporting Cast as
Sally. Pamla and Jon are proving themselves to be multitalented
yet again. They recently passed their real estate exams!
So if you are looking to relocate to their neck of the
desert give them a call.

Well Wishes and Prayers: Jeannette Lyons is making
daily gains. She was recently moved to a “step
down” ward which is out of ICU but not in the
regular hospital. She is off all life support, but does
still have the traech in. However she is able to speak!
She is very eager to return home, but until she regains
her strength she needs to stay put. (With luck Jeanette
will be able to transfer to the Eisenhower Med Center
by the end of September.) Once she is moved into a private
or semi-private room she’ll be able to receive
calls and flowers. In the mean time she’s making
do with cable TV! Cards and phone calls via Jack are
very welcome (as are visits...if you happen to be up
that way in the next few weeks give Jack a call so he
can arrange for a visit).
